Mommy!

Usually, first thing in the morning. You can find me at the desk with an empty bowl of cereal and/or a half drunk cup of coffee, responding to emails and browsing online. Jade is normally finishing up breakfast or walking around, making noises and begging for attention. I must admit, I normally just ignore her (for the most part) while I get my email fix in. Then, we start our morning.

So this morning, like usual, I'm sitting at the computer, emailing away and Jade is next to me talking

Jade: Mommy, Mommy, Hey you!
Mommy: Yes, Jade?
Jade: Mommy, help, peese
Mommy: What do you need Jade? (without turning around)
Jade: Um, bana (banana) payer (paper), off, now!
Mommy: (still not turning around) what do you mean? You have a banana, not paper
Jade: Mommy! Payer, bana, off *crying begins*
Mommy: Jade, don't cry, why are you crying?

It was at this point that I finally tore my eyes off the monitor, turned around and there was Jade with a half of banana in one hand. Stuck to it was a ton of toilet paper, that hadn't broken off the roll. She had dragged the paper all the way from the bathroom, into the other room, up next to me by the computer. Where she desperately wanted the toilet paper OFF her banana.

How it got on her banana in the first place. I'll never know. I broke off the toilet paper from her banana and then had to grab my camera to take a picture of how far she pulled the toilet paper. Mommy life is fun. hee, hee

A little bit of drama

Earlier this afternoon I put Jade down for her nap. She didn't want to go down for a nap, but I "knew" she was tired and put her down anyway. She cried for about 2 min and then everything became quiet. I assumed she had gone to sleep...but then when I heard her calling my name 20min later I wondered if she was just quietly playing in her room.

I was downstairs when I heard her little calls.
"mommy, mommy, I up! Help, peese" she said
"Jadey, you wanna get up?" (from the bottom of the stairs I replied)
"Ah huh!" she says.
"Okay, you can get up"

As I said this I began slowly, very slowly, climbing the stairs. By the time I got to her closed door Jade was next to it fiddling with the handle on the otherside. I reached out to open the door and to my horror realized...the door was LOCKED!

"Oh no" I said. "Jade, honey, did you lock the door?"
"Open door, peese!" she replied
"Oh dear, you have to unlock the door. Can you turn the nob?"
"It hard"
"You can do it, honey, turn the button, can you do that for mommy?"

This turned into a very long conversation that soon resulted in very strong tears on Jade's part. She began crying, yelling, begging me to open her door and let her out. 15min later I still couldn't pick the lock. I called Daddy
*ring, ring*
no answer. Drat.

More crying, screaming. At one point she calmed down and started offering other reasons why I should open the door such as
"mommy, door, I potty. Peese!" and "no, nap. All gone."

I felt so awful. Sadly, my lock picking skills did not increase with time. Below is a picture of all the tools I tried. Can you see the bobby pins stuck in the door nob? I did get a hold of Daddy, as he was leaving work.
Finally JB got home to save the day. He took off his sport coat and calmly started talking to poor little Jade, trying to get her to unlock the door. Same results as me.
The key hole was mutilated by now by all the tools I had tried to use to get the door open. Without skipping a beat he grabbed one of the screw drivers and took the molding that surrounded the door, then taking the screw driver to the latch, was able to get the door free.

Our hero! Jade was perched on her bed, with her night light being the only thing illuminating her dark room (it was about 5:30 by this time). She seemed fine, just sad. No doubt she probably thought we were keeping her prisoner in there on purpose. Poor thing.

As soon as she was safe and sound, JB took the door nob apart and turned it around so the locking part was facing the outside of the door. No more drama like this for me!

Here is little Jadey after the rescue.
And on a side note, here is Jade with her new kitchen set that some friends gave to us. The only thing better then recycled toys are...FREE recycled toys:) hee, hee.

You know your child isn't feeling well when...

Late in the morning I realized Jade seemed a bit warmer then usual. I took her temperature and found she was battling a slight fever. So, I put her down for a nap.

After getting up from her nap she didn't eat much and just sat, cuddling in my arms, while we watched cartoons together. After an hour of that, she got off the couch, picked up her blanket and said "I ready for a nap, now"

I didn't understand her at first and asked her to repeat her statement a few times before realizing what she just asked me. My poor little pumpkin' tater...I wrapped her up in my arms and put her down for her second nap of the day. I hope she feels better soon!

Update: Jade woke up from her second nap and seems fine. How is it kids can bounce back so quickly?

Cutting Jade's Hair

My daughter has been blessed with lovely, long, beautiful hair. I love her hair, I love playing with it, brushing it, washing it, bragging about it, etc. But the past few weeks it has been driving both her, and me, completely crazy. Despite the fact that it must be done a million times a day to stay out of her lovely face, it also has been tangling like mad. So, I decided it was time to cut it all off. Hee, hee.
Here are two pics of her lovely mane. I kept her distracted by having her brush her teeth. Then decided her hair wasn't wet enough, so I gave her a bath. After the bath I sprayed her hair with some de-tangling spray that my Mom suggested I buy (amazing, btw, if other moms out there have not tried it yet. And cheap too. I got my big bottle for $1.88 at wal-mart)
Then, taking a deep breath, I cut all her hair off. I honestly didn't mean to cut it quite this short...but it will grow back pretty fast.
After her cut I tried to give her a blow dry. She liked that at first, but quickly became bored and irritated.
Here she is playing around, I love this shot, shows great movement huh?
Being all cute and coy. Love my little munchkin.
*sigh*. Anyway, so even though she has gone to "Jack and Jills" back when she was 12mon old to have her bangs cut and an odd tail in the back of her head shortened to meet the rest of her hair. I want to say this really is her first "Real" hair cut. And I gave it to her! I'm so proud of myself.

Starting to wear headbands

Jade has owned headbands for many, many months now. Her hair has been long enough to wear them since she was born I think. lol. However, she really hates wearing them and never keeps them on. Until recently, that is. I had to post picture of how cute she looks wearing a head band. She has kept this one on for over an hour. So I think that's pretty impressive:)

My little reader

I heard Jade struggling with something in her room, so I went in to check. I found her pulling out book after book while trying to stay in her booster seat.
She finally pulled enough books off the shelf and found the one she was looking for.
And without giving any thought to me, just began to read.
This, ladies and gentleman, is what my daughter does all day long. She loves to just sit in her room reading. I guess I should consider myself very lucky. I don't have to entertain her and she is learning a lot I'm sure. But still, sometimes I worry...does my child read to much! lol

Photo Shoot of Jade

After brushing Jades hair today she smiled at herself in the mirror and then asked for a "pitcher" so I said "Sure". She went in her room, grabbed this chair, sat down and said "cheese!"

After we took a few pictures of her, she wanted a picture of "Nooes" (Knowles), I get to babysit Knowles a few days a week. Jade use to be really jealous of the attention I gave to him, but now she is use to it and looks forward to his visits. Especially if I let her give him his pacifier.

Bathing beauty

Jade sure loves bath-time. It's been fun to see how she's gone from hating bath time to loving bath time, to hating it again and now...loving it all over. She's found it a great place to play and be imaginative. Now that she talks more, I love to listen to her pretending with her tub toys and hearing her laugh at jokes, I assume she must be making to her toys.

She reads ALL the time. For Christmas she got so many new books and she "Reads" them all the time. Right now some of her favorites are the stack of "Clifford" books that Aunt Autumn bought for her. Earlier this afternoon Jonathan came in my room looking for Jade "she's been quiet for an awful long time, where is she?" he says. I reply "I bet she's reading in her room". Sure enough, he went up stairs and found her on her bed surrounded by a pile of books.

I think buying her the bed was one of the smartest things we've done so far. I was worried we were jumping the gun a bit on buying her a big kid bed. But no, not only has falling out of it not been a problem at all, but she loves being able to lay on her bed while reading books at any given time during the day.

Not being a big book reader, it warms my heart to see Jade following after her daddy and loving every minute spent with a book in hand. I hope this passion lasts for the rest of her life. We'll see.

Jade is becoming more articulate, it seems every morning there is something new we didn't know she knew how to say. This morning she requested "Cottage cheese" for breakfast.

I guess that's all the update I have for now. Happy Sunday everyone!

Things I want from Potterybarn

For my bedroom

For my living room

For my bathroom

For my kitchen

*grin* not that I "need" any of these things, of course.

Another new recipe

I never, ever make meatloaf. I use to like it as a kid, but now that I cook all the meals the idea of taking a huge chunk of ground beef and baking it like a loaf of bread, just seems/sounds very strange. That being the case I've never looked for or tried out any meatloaf recipes.

Well, after getting my most recent Williams-Sonoma catalog I was inspired by their cheesy meatloaf recipe. Not only did it appear to have more substance then just a hunk of meat, but it also claimed to be full of cheesy chunks.
So I tired it. The recipe required you to first saute carrots and celery (and mushrooms, which I omitted) in olive oil. While that was sauteing I cut up chunk of mozzarella cheese. Then I mixed up breadcrumbs, cheese chunks, ground meat, thyme, parsley, salt, pepper, eggs, sauteed veggies and shaped it all into a loaf in my baker. I then topped it with more breadcrumbs mixed with shredded mozzarella cheese and baked it for an hour.
Yummy, yum. I will never view meatloaf with the same boredom again. It was delicious.

I know it's corny to post pics of food and how you made it. But I'm really trying to get inspired to cook new recipes. And posting about it makes it all the more fun for me.

Here is the exact recipe if you want to make it yourself:

Ingredients:

4 Tbs. extra-virgin olive oil
2 carrots, cut into 1/4-inch dice
2 celery stalks, cut into 1/4-inch dice
1 onion, cut into 1/4-inch dice
1/2 oz. dried wild mushrooms, soaked in 1 cup hot water,
chopped, soaking liquid reserved
3 garlic cloves, minced
2 1/4 cups fresh bread crumbs
1 Tbs. plus 1/4 cup minced fresh flat-leaf parsley
2 oz. mozzarella cheese, shredded, plus 6 oz., cut into 1/2-inch cubes
Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste
2 lb. ground beef (80% lean)
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1/2 tsp. minced fresh thyme
Mashed potatoes for serving (see related recipe at left)

Directions:

Position a rack in the lower third of an oven and preheat to 350°F. Coat the bottom of a roasting pan with 1 Tbs. of the oil.

In a deep sauté pan over medium-high heat, warm 2 Tbs. of the olive oil. Add the carrots, celery and onion and sauté until tender and starting to caramelize, 8 to 10 minutes. Add the mushrooms and garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Let cool for 10 minutes.

In a bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups of the bread crumbs and 1/3 cup of the mushroom soaking liquid and soak for 5 minutes. In another bowl, combine the remaining 3/4 cup bread crumbs, the 1 Tbs. parsley, the remaining 1 Tbs. olive oil, shredded cheese, salt and pepper.

In a large bowl, using your hands, gently mix together the ground beef, soaked bread crumbs, vegetable mixture, eggs, the 1/4 cup parsley, thyme, cubed cheese, salt and pepper. Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan and shape into a 10-by-5-inch loaf. Cover the top and sides of the meat loaf with the cheese-bread crumb mixture.

Bake until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center of the meat loaf registers 165°F, about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Let the meat loaf rest for 5 minutes before slicing. Serve with mashed potatoes. Serves 8.
